How to win the Amazon Buy Box
When several sellers offer the same product, Amazon features one of them: the one with the “Add to Cart” and “Buy Now” buttons. That's the Buy Box, which Amazon now calls the Featured Offer. Here's how it's assigned, what you can do to win it and why the lowest price isn't always the answer.
What the Buy Box is
The Buy Box is the panel at the top of the product page from which customers buy with one click. When the same item is sold by several sellers, Amazon features the offer it considers most competitive; the others end up in the “Other sellers on Amazon” list, which many customers never open.
Amazon can show more than one Featured Offer. If no offer is eligible, a link to all buying options replaces the purchase buttons, and no seller holds the Buy Box.
The factors that matter
Amazon doesn't publish the full algorithm, but it clearly states the factors that weigh most.
- Total price, shipping included: Featured Offers are commonly at or below the lowest priced alternatives
- Shipping: fast, free and with a reliable delivery date. According to Amazon, fulfilling orders yourself can be as effective as its fulfillment network, if the service lives up to it
- Order experience: the right, undamaged item, condition as described, authenticity, correct charges and few disputes
- Availability: an out-of-stock product can't be the Featured Offer
- A price neither too high nor too low: an off-market price makes the offer ineligible, and a suspiciously low one can be blocked as a possible error
- Account: offers you fulfil yourself require the Professional selling plan
How to check whether your products are eligible
In Seller Central, on the Manage Inventory page, you can add the Buy Box eligibility column from the preferences: it shows for each product whether its offer can be featured.
Also keep an eye on the Account Health page: order defects, cancellations and late shipments are the metrics Amazon looks at, and that's where you find the targets to meet.
The right price: neither too high nor too low
Price is the factor you can act on fastest, and also the easiest to get wrong. Always lowering wins the Buy Box but eats your margin, and a race to the bottom with other sellers has no winners. Standing still, on the other hand, loses it as soon as a competitor moves.
Then there's a costly detail: Amazon reassigns the Buy Box with a few minutes' delay. Whoever keeps lowering during that window wins it at a lower price than needed, and stays there until the market changes.
The healthy rule is to follow the competitors that matter, within a minimum and a maximum that protect your margin, not to lower when you already hold the Buy Box, and to climb back as soon as there's room.
How Mossap helps
Mossap handles the price, the part that changes constantly. Shipping, metrics and availability remain in your hands.
- Tracks competitors 24 hours a day and compares offers on total price, shipping included
- Never goes below your minimum or above your maximum, which can also be calculated with formulas on cost, shipping or percentages
- Can avoid lowering your price when you already hold the Buy Box, and cap how far you go below whoever holds it
- With the upward price probe it looks for the highest price the Buy Box will hold, and steps back at once if it's lost
- Lets you choose whom to compete against: same condition, minimum seller rating, Amazon as a seller
- Prevents a merchant-fulfilled offer from going below the price of the same FBA offer
- Also handles the Amazon Business Buy Box, which has its own competitors

FAQ
Does the Buy Box always go to the lowest price?
No. Total price, shipping included, weighs a lot, but Amazon also considers delivery speed and reliability, order experience and availability. A slightly more expensive but more reliable offer can win.
Can you win the Buy Box without FBA?
Yes. According to Amazon, fulfilling orders yourself can be as effective as its fulfillment network, as long as you offer fast and reliable delivery. Offers you fulfil yourself require the Professional selling plan.
Why did I lose the Buy Box without changing my price?
Usually because a competitor lowered their price or improved delivery. It can also be due to running out of stock, worsening account metrics or a price Amazon considers off-market.
Can more than one seller hold the Buy Box?
Amazon can show more than one Featured Offer, and among very similar offers the Buy Box can move from one seller to another over time.
What does it mean when a link to all buying options replaces the Buy Box?
That at that moment no offer is eligible to be featured, often because prices are considered too high. The customer has to choose from the list of offers.
Is a repricer enough to win the Buy Box?
Not on its own: a repricer handles price, the factor that changes most often. Shipping, account metrics and availability depend on the seller, and without them even the best price may not be enough.
